How successful was the League in the 1920s?
The League of Nations had no experience dealing with problems, however in the 1920’2 they did very well at maintaining peace in the world. One very clear example was when an Italian General was assassinated in Greece (1923) while he was collecting some information for the League. Of course, Mussolini (Italy’s leader) was very upset with the Greeks. Therefore he invaded the small island of Corfu. The things got very intense between the Italians and the Greeks, but instead of the Greeks fighting back they asked the League for help. The Council of the League gathered and condemned Mussolini, he got told to leave Corfu immediately. Mussolini refuse to leave Corfu, therefore the Council changed their mind and order the Greeks to pay some money the Italy. With money in his pocket, Mussolini left happily. Also the league made some other very good actions, such as when they freed 200,000 slaves in Africa, after attacking an organization that had trafficked slaves for years. The league also prevented the spread of malaria and leprosy in 1926. This shows that the League of nations had some very good years at preventing wars and maintaining world peace.
